October light on Lake Wolfgang in St. Gilgen
The lift climbs to a 1,522m summit in 11 minutes and the boats keep a short daily run until 1 November 2026, but the village rest days decide which day you come.

The Zwölferhorn cable car lifts you from the valley station at 568m to a 1,522m summit in 11 minutes, and it has run on solar power since 2024. It runs until 1 November 2026, then closes from 2 to 19 November for inspection. The lake boats ended their main season on 26 October 2026 and keep a short daily run until 1 November.
The Zwölferhorn cable car and the summit hour
Zwölferhorn Seilbahn (St. Gilgen valley station) carries modern enclosed cabins up over autumn larch slopes, with the Wolfgangsee turquoise far below and the ridge line opening out as you rise. An adult return is €36, or €34 with the WolfgangseeCard, and a family ticket for two adults and one child is €84. A group fare starts at 10 adults, and the station asks for advance notice at peak times.

The summit is bare grass with a cross on the ridge and a panorama sun terrace. Walk the Pillstein panorama trail, and give the new Von Trapp family mini-museum at the top its 10 minutes. Twenty minutes is enough for the view, but an hour gets you the terrace and the trail too, which is the better use of a clear morning.
Das Zwölfer (Zwölferhorn summit) is where that hour goes: timber and glass, deck chairs and long wooden benches on the terrace, Austrian plates with the Wolfgangsee and the Schafberg filling the window. It seats up to 100 and prices are €€. The kitchen rests every Wednesday, and a table is worth booking before you ride up.

Mozartplatz, the church and the two museums
Begin the village at Mozartbrunnen am Mozartplatz (Mozartplatz), where Karl Wollek's 1920s fountain stands in front of the town hall on a small square of painted houses. A bronze boy Mozart plays the violin above a ring of water-spouting birds. Entry is free, five minutes covers it, and this is where the coach parties gather.

Two minutes away is Pfarrkirche zum hl. Ägidius, white, with a Gothic west tower under a double onion dome. Entry is free. The nave is late baroque in white and gold, built from 1767 to 1769, and it holds a Guggenbichler Madonna and a Rieger organ of 1991. The graves of Nannerl Mozart's husband and his mother are here. Services run during the day, so keep your voice low, and walk the walled cemetery and its war memorial on the way out.

Mozarthaus St. Gilgen (Ischler Straße) is the pale yellow former district court house with green shutters and a steep shingle roof. Mozart's mother was born in it, and his sister Nannerl lived here for 17 years; the period rooms keep painted wooden furniture and portraits of her. Adults pay €6, children of 11 and over €2.50. In autumn the whole visit runs by appointment, so phone before you walk up Ischler Straße.
HörArt – Musik.Instrumenten.Museum der Völker (Aberseestraße) packs 2,000 instruments into a modest village house, African drums and lutes and gongs racked floor to ceiling in tight rooms. The Africa show 'Alkebulan' runs into December. Autumn hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 11:00 and 15:00 to 17:00. Adults pay €6 and children €3, with €1 added outside those hours. Call first, and the curator will show you round.

The promenade, the boats and the Falkenstein path
St. Gilgen Seepromenade & Schiffsanlegestelle is flat walking with benches, moored rowing boats and a covered pier, and the Zwölferhorn rises straight out of the far shore. Mist sits on the water first thing. The pier tightens as each boat loads, while the benches a little further along stay free.

WolfgangseeSchifffahrt runs white twin-deck steamers with an open upper deck and wooden rails, crossing dark green water under forested cliffs and the Schafberg ridge to St. Wolfgang and Strobl. Fares are €€, children aged 4 to 14 pay a child rate, and a dog day pass is €7.50. Parties of 10 or more get a group fare, and 20 or more must reserve in advance by email. Low water currently limits wheelchair boarding to Strobl and St. Wolfgang.

Walkers have the Falkenstein pilgrimage route (Falkensteinwand), free and unticketed, 24 signposted stations from St. Gilgen via Fürberg to St. Wolfgang. The path is stone-stepped along the Falkenstein cliff, past old carved stone crosses and small chapels, and the cliff variant gives the best lake view in the valley from the 'Gschmo Platzl' ledge, which looks straight down the length of the Wolfgangsee. Allow two hours and 363m of climb. It narrows and steepens in places, in late autumn the leaves lie wet on the steps, and no coach tour comes anywhere near it.
Pick one of the two for the afternoon: the crossing sits you down with the water moving past, and the path puts you above it.
Breakfast, lunch and cake in the village
Bio Bäckerei Obauer (Steinklüftstraße) opens at 06:00, seventh-generation bakers with trays of dark organic sourdough, Semmeln and strudel behind glass. Prices are €. The shop is a counter with no seating, it trades mornings only and it closes Sunday. Buy breakfast here before the first cabin leaves.

Café Angusta (Ischler Straße) is minuscule, a handful of indoor tables and 10 seats in a walled garden, home-baked cakes and cut flowers on the counter. It stays open year-round, Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and it serves the best coffee and cake in the village. Breakfast needs a phone booking. Prices are €€.

Café Nannerl (Kirchenplatz) is the café next to the church that seats a crowd, 120 places in the old-fashioned rooms and 30 more on the garden terrace of an ornate townhouse with flower-hung balconies. Homemade tortes and a Melange arrive on marble tables, and the styling is grandmother's parlour by design. It closes Tuesday and Wednesday. Angusta and Nannerl both take cash only.

Gasthof zur Post (Mozartplatz) is the most reliable proper lunch on the square: three storeys of cream render, green shutters and geraniums, a vaulted panelled Stube inside, lake fish and Salzkammergut classics on the plate. Prices are €€. In October it rests Tuesday and Wednesday. Reserve a table.

Gasthaus Wirt am Gries (St. Gilgen centre) is the locals' choice, a small wood-panelled dining room away from the lakefront where the Tritscher family cook regional produce. Prices are €€. The hours are tight: evenings Wednesday to Friday, lunch only at the weekend, closed Monday and Tuesday.

Best time to go
Early morning holds the light on the lakefront, before the first coaches reach the village, and an early start leaves room for both the mountain and the water in one day. The lift and the boats sell at the door, and the square, the church and the pilgrim path cost nothing to enter.
Guided day trips from the city run seven days a week, so a Sunday arrival still has a way out here. The most popular of them has sold out on 24 December 2026; other dates are open.
Stop at Wolfgangsee Tourist Information St. Gilgen for 10 minutes. The staff speak English, they sell the WolfgangseeCard, and they hold the live word on which boats and which lift are running. Autumn hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 16:00, so arrive at the weekend and you plan without them.

Who this day suits
It suits a visitor with one free day who will start early. The lift, an hour at the top, the square, the church and one museum fill that day, and the cliff path takes most of a morning on its own.
Before you go
Phone both museums in autumn, since one opens by appointment and the other keeps split hours, and book your table at the summit and on the square. Pick a day other than Tuesday or Wednesday if a sit-down lunch matters.
