Salzburg's Hellbrunn Fountains and Movie Songs in October

The trick fountains, the gazebo and Salzburg's new film museum all shut on 1 November 2026, so October is the last month to walk the Hellbrunn estate properly.

Salzburg's Hellbrunn Fountains and Movie Songs in October
Salzburg, Austria

The stone banquet table in the Hellbrunn water garden shoots hidden jets of water out of its seats. The fountain walk goes round in batches with an audio guide and takes 50 minutes, plus another 30 minutes in the indoor rooms. The season closes on 1 November 2026.

What you see on the fountain walk

Schloss Hellbrunn and the Hellbrunn Trick Fountains (Fürstenweg entrance) are a white-and-ochre Mannerist palace and the baroque water garden beside it. The route takes you past the banquet table and into moss-dark grottoes holding a bronze Neptune and a tongue-rolling 'Germaul' mask, then ends at a water-powered mechanical theatre of more than 200 carved figures. The season opened on 28 March.

Adult entry is €16.50, the family ticket €36.50, a child ticket €6.50 and a student ticket €9.50. Groups of 20 or more pay €14.50 a head. The same ticket covers the SchauLust palace exhibition and the Folk Museum.

October hours are 09:30 to 17:30, with last admission at 16:30. Arrive after that and you have the free park and nothing else.

Tickets, batches and booking ahead

You go in with a batch and an audio guide, so your start time is the next batch rather than the minute you turn up. Four-hour guided tours of the film locations run seven days a week and include the gazebo. They are booking steadily at the moment, and their season runs from 1 February 2026 to 31 January 2028. Book ahead if you want a particular day.

The gazebo in the park

The Sound of Music Pavilion is a small white-painted iron-and-glass garden pavilion with arched lattice panes, alone on its gravel pad in a lawn clearing near the eastern park entrance, ringed by tall bare-branched autumn trees. It is free and unticketed. The interior has been closed off since a visitor was injured dancing on the benches, so you walk around it and photograph it from outside.

This is the only surviving film set piece left in Salzburg, moved here from the Leopoldskron lakeside. Coach groups circle it all day, and it is busiest mid-morning and early afternoon, so come at opening or in the last hour of the afternoon.

Sound of Music Salzburg (Fürstenweg 33 to 35) opened on 20 September 2026 in the converted palace gate buildings: the old hunting lodge, the coach house and the zookeeper's lodge. Inside is a full-scale white lattice gazebo replica you can walk into, wrapped in 360-degree projection, with film costumes and posters in dark-walled rooms. October 2026 is the first autumn it has been open.

Adult entry is €8, reduced €4.80, and a family ticket for one or two adults with children €16. Under-6s go free. It opens daily 09:30 to 17:30, shuts on 1 November and reopens on 20 March 2027. Entry runs on timed slots, and guided tours can be booked. The ticket desk hands out a discount voucher for the marionette version of the show.

The hill above the park

Volkskunde Museum im Monatsschlössl is a square cream-rendered 1615 hunting lodge on the wooded Hellbrunn hill, small-windowed and steep-roofed, its rooms crowded with carved Perchten masks, folk costume and painted chests. Your Hellbrunn ticket covers it and there is no separate queue. The path up is steep and takes 10 minutes. It opens daily 10:00 to 17:30 and keeps those hours until 1 November. The rooms are small: a dozen people fit where a full coach does not. This autumn's 'Edelweiß forever' exhibition goes into the real von Trapps and Salzburg in the 1950s and 1960s rather than the film's postcard version.

Steintheater Hellbrunn is Europe's first open-air opera stage, a natural amphitheatre cut out of grey conglomerate rock on a wooded hillside, raw cliff walls making the wings and backdrop around a flat grassy stage. The continent's earliest documented outdoor opera was sung here in 1617. The stage and the rock scenery have been fenced off since boulders fell in 2022, so you take the whole thing in from the approach path. It costs nothing, and the park gate is open 06:30 to 21:00.

Walking in along Hellbrunner Allee

Hellbrunner Allee is a dead-straight 2.5 km lane closed to cars, lined with 621 mature trees in a double row, flat meadow and marsh on either side and the Untersberg massif closing the view at the far end. It was laid out 400 years ago as the archbishop's processional approach, the oldest avenue of its kind in the world. The walk in from Freisaal takes 35 minutes and is at its best under October leaf colour. Bus 25 covers the same ground. Walkers, runners and cycling groups share the lane.

Eating on the estate

Schlossrestaurant Hellbrunn (Gasthaus zu Schloss Hellbrunn), Salzburg
Schlossrestaurant Hellbrunn (Gasthaus zu Schloss Hellbrunn), Salzburg

Schlossrestaurant Hellbrunn (Fürstenweg 37) is the only full sit-down kitchen on the estate, with a sun terrace and gravelled guest garden in the palace courtyard facing the ochre palace wall, and vaulted panelled dining rooms inside hung with modern art. Austrian mains run €18 to €30 (€€€). Breakfast is served daily until noon, and the kitchen covers gluten-free, lactose-free and fructose-free diets as well as vegetarian and vegan. It closes at 17:00 in autumn, so eat before the last fountain tour rather than after. Four rooms seat 300 indoors, with another 70 seats outside.

Parkcafé Schloss Hellbrunn is a small informal café on the park side of the palace buildings, with outdoor tables, a cake counter and a coffee machine, clipped parterre hedges beyond the chairs. Coffee and cake cost €4 to €8. It opens daily 10:00 to 17:00 for as long as the fountains run. Sit here for a Melange between the fountains and the gazebo.

The zoo on the same estate

Zoo Salzburg Hellbrunn has its enclosures built into a sheer grey cliff face at the foot of Hellbrunn mountain, alpine ibex on bare rock ledges with the Untersberg behind them and Grevy's zebras on open grass. It shares the Hellbrunn estate and stays open year-round, 09:00 to 17:30 in October. Adult entry is €17, the family ticket €39.50, a child ticket €7 and a youth ticket €11. Seniors pay €15.50 and dogs on short leads €3. Children who will not sit through a 50-minute audio guide go here instead.

The other film locations in the city

Mirabellgarten is a symmetrical baroque parterre with the rearing bronze Pegasus fountain and the stone-balustraded staircase of the Do-Re-Mi finale, gnome statues in the dwarf garden and the fortress on the skyline beyond. The gardens are free and open daily from 06:00 to dusk. Every music-themed coach tour starts here, and the garden is crowded from mid-morning. The Dwarf Garden and the Hedge Theatre close for winter. The palace's Marble Hall, where Mozart played as a boy, hosts chamber concerts most evenings from €35.

Schloss Leopoldskron is a pale rococo palace mirrored in a still lake, its lakeside terrace lined with a stone balustrade and urns, the Untersberg and the fortress across the water. Day visitors have the café, the terrace and the grounds; the state rooms are kept for hotel and conference guests. Coffee is €4 to €6 and lunch mains €12 to €18. The walk from the Old Town takes 20 minutes. This terrace, the Frohnburg facade and the Hellbrunn gazebo are the three pieces that make up the single villa people think they are visiting, and this is the quietest of them.

Stift Nonnberg (Nonnberg Abbey), Salzburg
Stift Nonnberg (Nonnberg Abbey), Salzburg

Stift Nonnberg is a Romanesque-Gothic abbey church on a wooded crag below the fortress, with a tall net-vaulted nave, a gilded winged altar and a heavy wooden grille screening the enclosed nuns' choir. It was the real Maria's convent and is still a working enclosure. The nuns sing Gregorian chant behind the grille at 06:45. Sung Vespers is at 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 16:30 on Sundays and holidays. The church is open daily from 06:30 to dusk and free to enter; carry 50 cents for the nave lights. Visitors see the church, the garden and the cemetery only, nobody is admitted during services, and large coach parties stay outside.

Salzburger Marionettentheater, Salzburg
Salzburger Marionettentheater, Salzburg

Salzburger Marionettentheater (Schwarzstraße 24) is an intimate red-and-gold horseshoe auditorium where metre-high hand-carved marionettes in dirndl and loden move on visible strings, surtitles projected on the wall beside the stage. The art is UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage, and the theatre works in October rain. The Sound of Music staging lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, sung in English with multilingual surtitles, and it appears only on scattered dates outside the summer peak, so check the calendar before you build a day around it. Seats run €20 in the upper balcony to €38 in the centre stalls, and the family ticket for two adults and two children is discounted. The box office opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, and again 90 minutes before curtain.

The Salzburger Festungskonzerte play in the candlelit vaulted Golden Hall of Hohensalzburg Fortress, under a gilt-starred blue ceiling beside a single marble pillar, the string players on a low platform. 'Best of Mozart' runs at 20:00 right through October 2026, with Saturdays taken by the Salzburg Chamber Orchestra. A concert ticket starts at €31 and dinner with the concert from €76. Dinner seatings start at 18:00 in the Panorama Restaurant, whose terrace looks over the Old Town roofs. The funicular ride and the night view are half of what you are paying for.

The Mozart Dinner Concert fills the whitewashed stone-vaulted baroque hall of St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, long candlelit tables under white linen, singers and musicians in powdered wigs and 18th-century costume performing between the courses. Doors open 18:30 for a 19:30 start. Standard seats are €85, premium €96 and exclusive €115. Students and children pay €68 to €79 in the lower categories. The restaurant's documented history runs back to 803.

Who the fountain walk suits

It suits a visitor with half a day who wants one attraction done properly, and it suits a family, because the zoo sits on the same estate for anyone who runs out of patience. The park, the gazebo and the Steintheater cost nothing; the ticket is what buys you the grottoes, the mechanical theatre and the two indoor collections.

Best time to go in October

Walk in down the avenue and be at the gate for opening, which puts the fountains behind you before the middle of the day. Climb to the Monatsschlössl next, then eat in the palace courtyard. Come back to the gazebo in the late afternoon, once the mid-morning and early-afternoon coach traffic has gone through. Arrive later than the last admission and you have a park walk and the Steintheater. Hold the marionettes or a fortress concert in reserve for a wet evening, and treat the chant at Nonnberg as a separate early start.

Before you go

Everything ticketed inside the Hellbrunn gate shuts for the winter on 1 November 2026, and the Salzburg Museum house at the gate stays shut through the following winter. Book the marionette staging and any dinner concert before you travel, and plan Nonnberg around its service times. See the Salzburg guide and the Salzburg hotel search.

When do the Hellbrunn trick fountains close in 2026?

The season runs 28 March to 1 November 2026. In October the gate opens at 09:30 and closes at 17:30, with last admission 16:30; after that you can only walk the free park.

How long does a Hellbrunn visit take, and what does the ticket include?

The audio-guided fountain walk takes about 50 minutes and sets off in batches, with another 30 minutes for the indoor rooms. The same ticket covers the SchauLust palace exhibition and the Volkskunde Museum im Monatsschlössl, a steep 10-minute climb above the park. Adult entry is €16.50, children €6.50 and students €9.50.

Can I see the Sound of Music gazebo without a ticket?

Yes. The Sound of Music Pavilion is in the public park near the eastern entrance, free and unticketed. The interior has been closed since a visitor was injured dancing on the benches, so you can walk around it and photograph it but not go inside. Coach groups circle it constantly, and it is busiest mid-morning and early afternoon.

It is. Sound of Music Salzburg opened on 20 September 2026 at Fürstenweg 33 to 35 and runs daily from 09:30 to 17:30, with timed entry and guided tours you can book. It closes on 1 November and reopens on 20 March 2027. Adult entry is €8, reduced €4.80 and a family ticket €16, with under-6s free.

What is the best way to get to Hellbrunn?

Walk or cycle in along Hellbrunner Allee, a traffic-free 2.5 km lane of 621 trees, 35 minutes on foot from Freisaal and best walked in October for the leaf colour. Bus 25 follows the same route.
